A year later and it seems Death saw more of a pattern than we were led to believe in Part One. A continuation of a light-hearted concept spun off from the much darker, and far cheaper CARNIVAL OF SOULS (Criterion DVD – made in 1962), FD2 is a fun watch, with exquisitely choreographed death scenes a la THE OMEN, enjoyable little horror film references to make viewers feel ‘in’, and a spritely pace. Most of the casting is smart, and the performances are respectable. The original JEEPERS CREEPERS had such unlikeable protagonists; here we’re allowed to sympathize. I have to admit I couldn’t quite get my mind around the intricacies of the ‘way out’, but that’s okay. As these teen pleasers go, it was relatively logical.

Just as Universal is the king of the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s horrors, so New Line takes the title for the past few decades. A slew of ‘Freddie’ films is available on DVD (for my taste, WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE is the one to own), and coming soon are the remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and FREDDIE VS JASON, which I missed in the theaters but have heard nothing but good things about as a mass audience experience.

My only gripe…I really wanted to see FD2’s manifestation of Death, but all we get to see is its handiwork.
