BEST FILMS OF 2011 By Glenn Andreiev

Personally, 2011 has been an upside down year for me. It made me feel like the star of a Lifetime Channel Movie that was directed by a spoiled three-year-old. Confused by that statement? I was confused when I did most of my movie-watching in the Summer and Fall. Everything on the screen was just “meh”. The studios saved the best movies for the last few days of 2011.

THE ARTIST– The feel of silent and early sound movies bursts alive in this daring comedy/drama about the ups and downs of a John Gilbert-like movie matinee idol. Many are hoping THE ARTIST will help bring a new interest to silent films. THE ARTIST’s director, Michel Hazanavicius is almost finished with his next film, THE PLAYERS, a series of short stories about infidelity.

THE DESCENDANTS – This could have been a manipulative heart-tugger about a man (well played by George Clooney) living in Hawaii with his kids after his wife is killed in an accident.

THE GREEN – An indie gem about a gay high school teacher who is wrongly accused of molesting one of his students. Directed with true class by Steven Williford, and starring Jason Butler Harner, Cheyenne Jackson and Julia Ormond.

HUGO – Martin Scorsese gives us this fantastic 3-D telling of a little boy living in a Paris train station in 1930 where he encounters a financially ruined Georges Melies (Ben Kingsley), who was one of the first film-makers to work with fantastic special effects. So, is this “silent movie trend” in movies this year going to let younger audiences immerse themselves in the beauty of silent films?

LIMITLESS – A down on his luck writer discovers a pill that clears your mind, letting you to make the perfect decisions, whether it be picking the best stocks, or choosing the right things to do when escaping an assassin. Bradley Cooper is perfect here in the lead role.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN – Based on a book by Colin Clark, who served as personal assistant to Marilyn Monroe when she was in London filming THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL with Laurence Olivier. One of the more intelligent films about what it is like to under the spotlight 24/7/365.

SOME GUY WHO KILLS PEOPLE – Director Jack Perez gives us this sweet and macabre tale about a small town over-whelmed with ice-cream related homicides. Stars Kevin Corrigan, Karen Black, Barry Bostwick.

TCM REMEMBERS – At every year’s close TCM (Turner Classic Movies) presents a five minute montage of clips of famous film people who have passed during the year. This year, it was beautifully paced and scored, and they mention “B-Movie outsiders” like Tura Satana, Yvette Vickers, and Norma Eberhardt in the same breathe as Cliff Robertson, Peter Falk, and Barbara Kent (possibly the last surviving silent film star) Absolutely Bravo, TCM, Bravo!

This is the last “10 Best of the Year” ever, according to the Mayan Calendar. The Mayans feel that towards the end of 2012, great earthquakes, floods, and what-not will wipe out almost everybody and everything. But, films will still be made. Here are two advanced candidates for the Best Films of 2017.

SEX AND THE CITY 5 – The East Coast (and Manhattan) falls into the Atlantic Ocean. In what is left of the Vermont wastelands, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), two survivors in a world thrown back to the cave-days, try to seduce and lure a rich man who has entered the commune. You see, he has a secret stash of tuna fish cans.

HAPPY FEET 3 – On an ice-flow which used to be the Washington DC Mall, a dancing penguin competition accidentally buries the top U.S Government survival bunker housing President Obama, John Boehner, Glenn Beck, and President-Elect Kardashian.
