Can’t believe I’ve never seen this one, or haven’t seen it since 1955. Joseph H.(Gun Crazy) Lewis takes us down an ornery noir path, in the company of characters who rant out their philosophies with rabid conviction and then instantly betray themselves, usually in the same scene, with a look, a word, a sentence, an action. Once you get the rhythm down, it’s hypnotic and funny. Tarantino’s been here, robbing some bones.
The transfer’s good, with rich blacks. The narrative twists and turns necessitate a seat belt it you’ve got back problems, and Richard Conte, Lee Van Cleef, and Cornel Wilde, among others, deliver the sleazy goods.
